Notion Expert tip: Get a Homepage

Here's one thing you can do today to improve your productivity in Notion: Build a kick-ass homepage.

If you're new to Notion? Below is a quick guide on how to build a great homepage.

Let's start with the basics. What's a homepage? Think of your Notion homepage as a hub for your life.

Whether it's personal or professional, your homepage is a place for you to organize all the documents, tasks and databases that you rely on everyday.

Ask any Notion Expert about their homepage and they'll tell you it's the most important page in their workspace. The pros use it to supercharge their Notion experience by making frequently used pages, databases, and information easily accessible.

But great homepages aren't just for the pros, anyone (even Notion newbies) can build and optimize their own homepage in less than 30 minutes. Here's how.

Step one: Figure out workflow

Start by working backwards. The most important thing to consider when building your homepage is making sure that it seamlessly integrates with your workflow. Otherwise you'll never use it.

But to do that, you have to figure out what your workflow is. Start by thinking through the pages/databases/tasks that you most frequently use and make a list. Here are some of mine...

  • Tasks (database)
  • Key Project Tracker (page)
  • Habit Tracker (database)

Step two: What info do you need?

Then, ask yourself what information you want at your fingertips. For example, the weather, your calendar, the date, etc.

If you have that info in a Notion page or database, great! But what if you don't... Let's say you'd love to see the weather in your homepage. Does Notion have a weather feature? No. But Notion does have an embed feature which lets you add an external weather widget to your page.

Sound complicated? It's really not. I've included widgets in my templates so you can see how to incorporate them. There's also a great list of widget options here. And if you're struggling to embed them, August Bradley has put together a great tutorial that walks you through step-by-step how to add a widget to your page.

Step three: Get inspired

Next... take a look at some popular templates for inspiration. I created four free templates to speed up the process.

You can also find some incredible homepage setups on r/Notionso and the Notion Made Simple Facebook page.

Once you figure out your workflow and know what data you want to include, why not take a crack at it yourself? Start playing around with the layout and you'll come up with a personalized homepage in no time.
